20 October 2004: some Eurasian geopolitcs

A smattering of articles from the last few months. The first two are particularly incisive in cutting through the canard that the US offensives in the Mideast and Central Asia are simply the result of a knee-jerk, desperate effort to maintain a supply of cheap oil to the US by grabbing "dwindling reserves" — a cover story for imperial aggression against Eurasian power rivals who could threaten Atlanticist dominance and the plan for world government.

'The US is making use of its occupation of Iraq and intervention in Sudan to ìencircleî the Chinese giant and depriving it from the flow of the Arab oil to halt its stunning development and steady economic growth, Arab Analysts have said.

ìThe US sees future challenges from China , that is way Washington is trying by all means to encircle the Asian giant from all directions. In achieving its goals, the US has invaded Afghanistan and had military presence in Pakistan as well as in South Korea and the Pacific islands,î said Mohammad Al-Sayed Salim, professor of political sciences at the faculty of economics and political sciences, Cairo University.'

Sudan: Round Gazillion byÝStephen Gowans

"The Shanghai Five,Ý a security organization China established to protect a planned pipeline to carry petroleum resources from the oil rich Caspian Sea, fell apart when the US invaded Afghanistan and set up bases throughout Central Asiaóalong the proposed pipeline route.

And China also had a deal to develop Iraqi oil -- one that's unlikely to be honored, now that the US has 141,000 troops in the country, and has installed its own people in Iraq's interim government to look out for the interests of corporate America.

Blocking Chinese oil deals in Iraq, scuppering the Shanghai Five, and working to undermine Chinese oil field development in Sudan serves a strategic goal of the US: to limit the rise of a great power rival. Keeping China (along with the European Union and Japan) dependent on the US for access to oil, is one way of ensuring US primacy remains unchallenged."
